Betty's embarked on the journey of transitioning from Magento 1 to Magento 2

  • Background

For almost a century, Bettys has been a destination in Yorkshire, drawing visitors for a taste of its offerings. The inaugural tea room opened its doors in Harrogate in 1919. Today, alongside six Café Tea Rooms scattered across Yorkshire, Bettys showcases its specialties worldwide through its online shop and Bettys Cookery School.

Despite its global reach, Bettys remains rooted in its heritage. As a family-owned enterprise, it has upheld the values of its Swiss-Yorkshire background across generations. Committed to utilizing the finest ingredients, often sourced locally, and fostering artisanal craftsmanship, Bettys continues to captivate its patrons with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring each visit is a memorable experience

  • Challenges

Few things are more disheartening than realizing you need to start over with your online sales platform, especially when you've already invested significant time and resources into your current system. This situation is not just common; it's also incredibly frustrating and costly. Existing investments become sunk costs, unable to be transferred to a new platform. It's a dead end in terms of technology and finances.

Bettys, renowned for its luxury gifts, bakery, and café tea rooms, found themselves in this frustrating predicament. Their products, often perishable with varying expiration dates, added another layer of complexity to their delivery scheduling. Behind what may seem like a straightforward interface, Bettys had to implement intricate rules and logic to ensure that every product, regardless of combination, was delivered fresh.

  • Solution

After parting ways with two Magento ecommerce agencies, it became evident that the system, developed across two platforms, was becoming increasingly inefficient and costly to maintain.

Both Bettys and ourselves recognized the need to transition from the existing technology to Magento 2, despite the challenges it posed. However, we saw this as an opportunity to prevent similar redundancies in the future.

This upgrade was more than just a platform migration; it presented an opportunity to separate the rules and logic from Magento and adopt a platform-agnostic ATP (Available to Promise) micro-service. By isolating this functionality into its own self-contained software, Bettys can transition to a different platform in the future without the need for another costly rewrite.
